About Nemours Estate
Nemours Estate is the Wilmington country estate created by Alfred I. du Pont, centered on a 47,000-square-foot mansion completed in 1910 by the architectural firm Carrère and Hastings. The 77-room house, French-inspired formal landscape, and early automobile collection reflect the wealth, technology, tastes, and household operations of the du Pont family in the early twentieth century.
Visitors explore the mansion and Chauffeur's Garage largely at their own pace, with guides stationed throughout, then can walk through some 200 acres of formal gardens, grounds, and woodlands modeled in part on Versailles. The combination of architecture, decorative arts, vintage cars, and monumental garden design makes Nemours a strong counterpoint to the industrial story at nearby Hagley; the estate also connects to Alfred I. du Pont's philanthropic legacy and the children's health institutions that grew from his will. The Sunken Garden is currently under renovation and is expected to reopen in late summer 2026.
