Research Methodology and Sources

Historical research

Research begins with the subject of a destination, event, era, or route. The preferred source order is primary and official material where available, followed by reputable archives, museums, universities, historical societies, and established reference works. Conflicting claims should be represented carefully rather than turned into false certainty.

Visitor information

Addresses, hours, prices, tour availability, parking, and accessibility are more changeable than historical background. Destination pages show available details and direct readers to an official website when one is stored. Always verify time-sensitive information before travel.

Source display

When a destination has an official website in the Roads of History catalog, it is linked as an official resource. A broader citation-by-citation source catalog is not yet available on every page.
