Overview
This two-day route follows a clear sequence within Sherman's November–December 1864 March to the Sea. At Georgia's Old Governor's Mansion in Milledgeville, travelers encounter the wartime state capital and a building occupied during the Union passage through the city. The Brown House Museum in Sandersville adds an unusually personal campaign stop: the restored house served as a temporary headquarters for William T. Sherman during the march. The route then reaches the coast at Fort McAllister, where Union forces captured the Confederate earthworks in December 1864 and opened contact with the Federal fleet. It concludes in Savannah at the Green-Meldrim House, Sherman's headquarters after the city's occupation. The four stops connect government, civilians, military operations, and command decisions while keeping the journey focused on places directly tied to the march.
