Historic Blakeley State Park

Historic Blakeley State Park protects more than 2,000 acres in the Mobile-Tensaw Delta and combines archaeological, military, community, and natural history in one landscape. The property includes evidence of Native American occupation dating back thousands of years, the remains of the early Alabama town of Blakeley, and extensive Civil War resources.

The park's best-known historical association is the Battle of Fort Blakeley, fought on April 9, 1865, the same day Robert E. Lee surrendered the Army of Northern Virginia at Appomattox. After more than a week of siege operations, Union forces captured the Confederate defenses at Blakeley in the largest Civil War battle fought in Alabama and one of the war's final major actions. Roughly 20,000 soldiers took part, including a substantial number of United States Colored Troops.

Visitors can explore preserved battlefield earthworks and historical areas on an extensive trail system, follow self-guided battlefield interpretation, learn about the park's early-town and military history, and experience the surrounding delta through hiking, biking, horseback riding, educational programs, and boat cruises. Its blend of preserved battlefield terrain and protected natural habitat makes Blakeley valuable both as a historical destination and as a place to experience the Mobile-Tensaw landscape.
