About Marks' Mills Battleground State Park
Marks' Mills Battleground State Park commemorates the Battle of Marks' Mills, fought on April 25, 1864, during the Camden Expedition. Union troops under Lieutenant Colonel Francis Drake were escorting a large wagon train from Camden toward Pine Bluff when Confederate forces under Major General James F. Fagan struck the column near the road junction at Marks' Mills.
The engagement ended in a decisive Confederate victory, with much of the Union escort killed, wounded, or captured and the wagon train lost. The defeat compounded the supply problems already facing Major General Frederick Steele and helped convince him to abandon Camden and retreat toward Little Rock. The site is one of the preserved components of the Camden Expedition Sites National Historic Landmark.
The state park is a small roadside historical site rather than a large battlefield complex. Visitors can see commemorative markers and interpretive exhibits, walk the shaded grounds, and use picnic facilities beneath mature pine and oak trees. It is especially valuable when visited as part of a larger Camden Expedition route connecting Poison Springs and Jenkins Ferry, where the sequence of battles reveals how quickly the Union campaign unraveled.
