About Historic Washington State Park
Historic Washington State Park preserves the core of Washington, an important nineteenth-century town along the Southwest Trail. Travelers including James Bowie, Sam Houston, and Davy Crockett passed through the community, and local blacksmith James Black is traditionally associated with the famous Bowie knife. During the Civil War, Washington also served as Arkansas's Confederate capital from 1863 to 1865 after Union forces occupied Little Rock.
Visitors can explore a large collection of historic buildings and museums, including the 1874 Courthouse visitor center, a blacksmith shop, weapons exhibits, and a print museum. Guided interpretation and demonstrations help turn the preserved townscape into an immersive experience, making the park especially rewarding for travelers interested in frontier transportation, craftsmanship, politics, and Civil War-era Arkansas.
