About Richmond National Battlefield Park
Richmond National Battlefield Park is a collection of thirteen Civil War sites distributed across the city of Richmond and the surrounding counties. Together they preserve battlefields, defensive earthworks, river positions, and other places associated with repeated Union attempts to capture the Confederate capital and the campaigns that ultimately forced its evacuation in April 1865.
The park includes major landscapes such as Cold Harbor, Gaines' Mill, Malvern Hill, Drewry's Bluff, and Fort Harrison. These places illuminate the Seven Days Battles, the Overland Campaign, the defenses of Richmond, and the military importance of the city's government, rail connections, hospitals, and manufacturing facilities.
The Chimborazo Medical Museum and visitor center provides orientation for the park's approximately 80-mile self-guided driving route. Exhibits, original medical objects, a hospital model, and a film interpret one of the Civil War's largest military hospital complexes, while the wider park offers walking trails, surviving fortifications, interpretive signs, and seasonal ranger programs. Visiting several units gives travelers a much fuller understanding of Richmond's wartime geography than any single battlefield can provide.
