Overview

About The American Civil War Museum at Historic Tredegar

The American Civil War Museum at Historic Tredegar occupies part of the former Tredegar Iron Works complex beside the James River in downtown Richmond. The museum examines the causes, course, consequences, and continuing legacies of the Civil War through Union, Confederate, African American, military, political, and civilian experiences.

Tredegar was one of the nation's most important antebellum industrial sites and became the Confederacy's largest iron producer. More than half of the cannon used by Confederate armies were cast there, armor plate for the ironclad CSS Virginia was rolled at the works, and the operation relied heavily on enslaved labor alongside free workers.

Inside the museum, two floors of galleries carry visitors from the sectional crisis through war, emancipation, Reconstruction, and later memory. Hundreds of original objects, changing exhibitions, audiovisual interpretation, and the immersive film "A People’s Contest: America’s Civil War & Emancipation" make this an essential Richmond stop for connecting battlefield history with the industrial and human systems that sustained the conflict.
