Overview
This route uses northwest Georgia's preserved battlefields and railroad landscape to explain how the 1864 campaign for Atlanta unfolded. Chickamauga and Chattanooga National Military Park provides the essential 1863 military prelude, while Tunnel Hill shows the Western & Atlantic Railroad corridor that made movement and supply possible. Resaca then marks the first major battle of the Georgia Campaign as Union armies pushed south from the mountains. On day two, Pickett's Mill and Kennesaw Mountain reveal the costly maneuvering and frontal fighting that characterized the advance toward Atlanta. The route ends at Allatoona Pass, where a fierce October 1864 battle centered on the same railroad supply line after Atlanta had fallen. The result is a coherent military-and-transportation story rather than a collection of disconnected battlefields.
