About Pickett's Mill Battlefield State Historic Site
Pickett's Mill Battlefield State Historic Site preserves the scene of the May 27, 1864 Battle of Pickett's Mill, part of the Atlanta Campaign. Union forces attempting to turn the Confederate right encountered troops under Patrick Cleburne and launched a costly assault that failed to break the Confederate position. The battlefield remained largely undeveloped, allowing many of its original features and defensive works to survive.
Visitors can walk roads used by Union and Confederate troops, see preserved earthworks, cross wooded portions of the battlefield, and follow trails through the ravine associated with some of the fiercest fighting. A visitor center and museum provide additional context through artifacts and exhibits, and an original 1800s pioneer cabin is opened during selected programs and events. The combination of preserved terrain and interpretation makes the site especially valuable for understanding how topography and field fortifications influenced combat during the Atlanta Campaign.
