About Chisholm Trail Outdoor Museum
The Chisholm Trail Outdoor Museum is a living-history complex on the site of Wardville, Johnson County's first county seat. Operated by the Johnson County Heritage Foundation, the museum interprets frontier settlement, cattle-driving culture, transportation, law, education, and everyday life in nineteenth-century Texas.
Visitors can explore the oldest surviving log courthouse in Texas, a stage station and saloon, a sheriff's office and jail, the Nolan River Schoolhouse, a historic mule barn, a working blacksmith shop, and collections of Western and Chisholm Trail artifacts. The grounds also include the Big Bear Native American Museum and a restored stagecoach associated with early Western films.
The museum is worth visiting for the unusually broad range of indoor collections, historic structures, reconstructed frontier spaces, and occasional demonstrations gathered in one walkable setting. Because the site is volunteer-operated and outdoor access is weather dependent, visitors should confirm gate conditions before making a special trip.
