About USS Constitution
USS Constitution is a three-masted wooden frigate launched in Boston in 1797 as one of the United States Navy’s original six frigates. The ship served in the Quasi-War, the Barbary conflicts, and the War of 1812, when victories over British warships helped earn the enduring nickname “Old Ironsides.” Still a commissioned U.S. Navy vessel, Constitution remains both a historic artifact and an active ceremonial, training, and educational ship.
After passing through security, visitors may board the ship and explore portions of its historic decks while active-duty sailors interpret its construction, battles, crew, and continuing naval service. Access can change because of weather, maintenance, ceremonies, or operational commitments, and the steep ladders and confined spaces may limit accessibility. The adjacent USS Constitution Museum offers additional exhibits but is a separate organization, making the ship itself the centerpiece of a broader Charlestown Navy Yard visit.
