About Yellow Bluff Fort Historic State Park
Yellow Bluff Fort Historic State Park preserves the remains of a fortified Civil War encampment near the mouth of the St. Johns River. Despite its name, no conventional masonry or timber fort stood here; Confederate troops constructed earthworks in 1862 and positioned artillery to monitor and defend the waterway leading into inland northeast Florida. Union forces later occupied the position, and several Black Union regiments served at or passed through Yellow Bluff during the war.
Visitors can walk a short nature trail across the contours of the surviving T-shaped earthworks, examine replica cannons and a commemorative monument, and picnic beneath mature live oaks. The compact site offers an accessible, contemplative look at Jacksonville's wartime defenses and the military importance of the St. Johns River.
