About Buckman Tavern
Built in 1710, Buckman Tavern is an eighteenth-century public house beside Lexington Battle Green and one of the central historic properties operated by Lexington History Museums. Before dawn on April 19, 1775, Captain John Parker and members of the Lexington militia gathered inside while awaiting reports of British regulars advancing from Boston.
Visitors explore the tavern through a self-guided audio tour, moving through rooms interpreted as a working colonial tavern and community meeting place. Period furnishings, artifacts, and interpretive displays connect everyday tavern life with the opening hours of the American Revolution, while upstairs galleries host rotating exhibitions.
Because the building stands next to the ground where the first armed clash occurred, it offers an unusually immediate link between a surviving colonial structure and the events outside its doors. A visit pairs naturally with the Battle Green and nearby historic sites in central Lexington.
