About Resaca Battlefield Historic Site
Resaca Battlefield Historic Site preserves ground associated with the Battle of Resaca, fought in May 1864 as Union forces under William T. Sherman pushed south into Georgia against the Confederate Army of Tennessee under Joseph E. Johnston. The fighting at Resaca became the first major battle of the Atlanta Campaign and took place across a broad landscape of ridges, fields, roads, and defensive positions around the town.
The Gordon County-managed site protects significant portions of that battlefield, including surviving Union and Confederate earthworks and artillery positions. Visitors can follow approximately six miles of trails, read interpretive signs, and explore the terrain where some of the battle's heaviest fighting occurred. The park is an especially useful stop for understanding how terrain, field fortifications, and maneuver shaped the early stages of the Atlanta Campaign.
